세계적인 유통기업 월마트의 창립자 샘 월튼(1918~1992)은 항상 고객을 최우선으로 여기는 것으로 유명하다.

전 세계 월마트 매장에는 직원들이 외치는 이른바 ‘월마트 구호’가 있다. “월마트! 누가 최고죠? 고객이요.” 조지 부시 전 대통령 부부가 월마트를 방문했을 때 직원들이 월튼을 향해 이 구호를 외쳤고 당시 대통령 부부와 취재진이 모두 놀랐다는 일화가 있다.

미주리대학교에서 경제학을 전공한 월튼은 대학 졸업 후 군대에 입대했다가 헬린 월튼과 결혼했다. 그는 제대후 자신이 모은 돈과 장인에게 빌린 돈을 합친 2만5000달러로 아칸소 주(州) 뉴포트에서 월마트 전신인 벤 플랭클린 잡화점을 열었다.

월튼은 상품 공급자를 직접 만나 싼 가격으로 물건을 구입하는 영업 전략을 폈다. 이에 따라 그는 2년 만에 장인에게 빌린 돈을 다 갚고 1962년에는 16개 체인점과 월마트 1호점을 개장했다.

월마트는 아시아와 유럽, 아프리카 등 세계 곳곳으로 판매망을 넓혀 전 세계 직원 숫자만 210만명이 넘는다. 매출액 기준으로 상위권을 달리는 유통기업으로 자리매김했다.

월튼은 이같은 공로로 1992년 3월 부시 대통령으로부터 미국 시민 최고 영예의 상 ‘자유의 메달’을 받았다. 혈액암으로 투병중이던 그는 1992년 4월 74세를 일기로 타계했다.
