제인 구달이 처음부터 밀림 속에서 침팬지와 어울릴 수 있었던 건 아니었다. 그는 처음에는 침팬지를 구경조차 할 수 없었다. 그는 일부러 높은 언덕에 올라 침팬지들이 자기 모습에 익숙해지도록 하고 천천히 침팬지 영역에 다가가 털을 골라주는 등 신체 접촉에 성공했다. 자연 안으로 천천히 스며든 그녀 전략은 결국 성공했다.
