영국 소설가 윌리엄 새커리(William Makerpeace Thackeray·1811~1863)의 삶은 그의 소설과는 다르게 어디로 튈 지 알 수 없었다. 그는 1829년 영국 케임브리지대학에 들어갔으나 공부에 열중하지 못하고 중퇴해 유럽을 다녀온 후 법학을 공부했으나 이마저도 오래 가지 못했다.

화가가 되기 위해 파리로 떠난 새커리는 보헤미안적인 삶을 살았다. 하지만 친구에게 배운 도박으로 빚만 떠안았다. 그 후에 부실한 신문사를 매수했다 파산해 아버지 유산을 모두 탕진하는 불운도 따랐다. 그는 1836년 결혼에 성공하지만 아내가 정신병에 걸리기도 했다.

그런 어려움을 겪은 뒤 오직 문필에만 전념한 윌리엄 새커리는 ‘펜더니스 이야기(The History of Pendennis)’, ‘허영의 시장(Vanity Fair)’등 대작을 쏟아냈다. 그의 소설은 동시대 작가 찰스 디킨스에 비해 박력 있진 않았지만 적절히 억제돼 있었고 교양 있는 문체를 지니고 있었다.

그는 1863년 52세의 나이로 세상을 떠난 후 150년이 흐른 지금 그의 작품들 속에 담긴 날카로운 역사감각이 재평가 받고 있다.
