키스헤링이 처음 작품활동을 시작한 곳은 뉴욕 지하철역에 있는 빈 광고판이었다. 그는 그곳에서 분필을 이용해 원색적이고 단순하지만 입체적인 자신만의 스타일을 선보였다.
그는 유명해진 이후에도 방탕한 삶을 살지 않았다. 그는 슬럼가 청소년을 위한 프로젝트에 참여하고 여러 공공벽화 주문을 맡아 작업했다. 그는 친구의 마약 중독을 걱정해 ‘마약은 인생을 망친다’는 작품을 남기기도 했다.
이와 함께 미술은 고위층만 즐길 수 있는 특권이라는 풍토를 허물고 싶어했다. 그는 자신의 작품들이 대중에게 쉽게 다가갈 수 있도록 전통적 갤러리 개념에서 벗어나 지역 주민들과 함께 하는 ‘팝 숍(Pop Shop)’을 열었다.
헤링은 1988년 에이즈(AIDS)로 세상을 떠나기에 앞서 에이즈 환자를 위한 키스헤링재단을 설립하는 등 마지막까지 세상을 위한 삶을 살았다.

Necessity, Abigail Adams
