드 골은 대통령 재임 당시 민족 자결에 토대를 둔 자주적 ‘비동맹 외교정책’을 펼쳤다. 이를 위해 북대서양조약기구(NATO)나 유럽경제공동체(ECC)에 불참을 선언하기도 했다.
그는 또 프랑스를 세계 열강 대열에 다시 올려놓기 위해 군비를 확장하고 경제력을 강화하는 데 힘을 기울였다. 드 골 정부의 이같은 기조는 이후 수십년간 프랑스의 대외 정책에 영향을 끼쳤다.
그는 1962년에 알제리 독립을 국민투표로 가결시키고 7년이 넘는 알제리 전쟁을 끝냈다. 이를 통해 프랑스 경제의 최대 걸림돌을 평화적으로 제거했다는 평가를 받고 있다.
