공교롭게도 버냉키는 자신의 직무 기간 8년중 5년을 불경기 극복에 시간을 보냈다. 금융 위기 이전 미국 주택가격 붕괴로 발생했던 서브프라임모기지(비우량주택담보대출)사태까지 합치면 임기 대부분을 불경기와 싸우며 보낸 셈이다.

그에 대한 평가는 양 극단으로 갈린다. 3차례에 걸친 대규모 양적완화(QE)로 미국 경제를 회복기로 이끌었지만 최근 신흥국 통화 위기를 초래한 원인 제공자라는 비난도 받고 있다.
