마야 안젤루는 미국을 대표하는 배우이며 시인이다. 1928년 미국 세인트루이스에서 태어난 그는 드라마 같은 인생을 살았다. 그는 여덟 살 때 강간을 당해 법정에 서게된다. 그는 강간범이 살해당하는 일을 겪고 난 후 실어증에 걸리지만 이웃 여성 도움으로 문학에 빠진다. 이 후 샌프란시스코 최초의 인종차별을 반대하는 흑인 전차 차장이 된다.

1960년대에 마틴 루터 킹 목사는 그녀를 ‘국제 여성의 해’ 미국 준비위원회 위원으로 위촉했다. 문학의 끊을 놓지 않는 그녀는 1969년 자전적 소설 ‘새장에 갇힌 새가 왜 노래하는지 나는 아네’로 흑인여성 최초의 베스트셀러 작가가 된다. 이 후 영화 ‘뿌리’에도 출연해 에이미상 후보에 오른다.

마야 안젤루는 1993년에는 빌 클린턴 대통령 취임식에서 축사를 연설하기도 했다. 그는 또 2011년미국 대통령 자유메달 시상식 자유훈장을 받았다.
