셜리 템플(Shirley Temple) 주연, 앨런 드완(Allan Dwan) 감독의 영화 ‘서니브룩 농장의 레베카(Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm, 1983)’에 나오는 장면이다. 한 남성이 롤라에게 사랑을 고백하고 싶지만, 차마 용기를 내지 못하고 우물쭈물하고 있습니다.

그 모습을 보며 답답해진 롤라는 남자에게 적극적으로 말하죠. “Let’s have it. Shoot.”

"Let’s have it"은 시원하게 해결하다, 할 말 있으면 하다 등의 뜻을 가지고 있습니다. 어서 하라는 의미이죠.

그리고, "Shoot"의 가장 먼저 떠오르는 의미는 (총 등을) 쏘다라는 뜻일 겁니다. 문맥을 보지 않고, “Let’s have it. Shoot.”라는 한 문장만 보면 어서 내게 총을 쏘라는 의미가 될 수도 있죠. 물론 여기서는 그런 의미는 아닙니다. 영화를 촬영하다라는 뜻도 있죠. 특히, 미국에서는 shoot이라는 단어 자체가 (남에게 하고 싶은 말을) 말해라는 뜻으로 사용됩니다.

이 장면에서 “Let’s have it. Shoot.”은 할 말 있으면 어서 말을 하라는 뜻이죠. 영어를 몰라도 그렇게 생각되겠지만.
