If the film, play or any project I`m involved in requires some sort of violence or nudity to advance the plot, scene or character in any way, then I would be considered unprofessional not to oblige. Of course, I want to make sure -- and I think I always have -- that the scenes are shot in good taste. I try to have some control; now that I know what I`m capable of including in a contract, I can continue that control. Nudity is not something I necessarily want to avoid and yet it`s not the most fun thing in the world to do. 《사기(史記)》의 유후세가(留侯世家)에 나오는 말이다.

진(秦)의 시황제가 죽자 천하는 크게 동요하기 시작했다. 많은 사람들이 곳곳에서 진나라를 타도하려고 군사를 일으켰는데 그 중에 유방(劉邦)과 항우(項羽)도 끼어 있었다. 그런데 유방이 항우보다 앞서 진나라의 도읍 함양에 입성했다. 유방은 3세 황제 자영으로부터 항복을 받고 왕궁으로 들어갔다. 궁중에는 온갖 재보와 아름다운 궁녀들이 잔뜩 있었다. 유방은 마음이 동하여 그대로 궁중에 머물려고 했다. 이에 용장 번쾌(樊噲)가 간했다.

“아직 천하가 통일되지 않았습니다. 속히 이곳을 떠나 적당한 곳에 진을 치는 게 좋겠습니다.”

그러나 유방은 듣지 않았다. 이번에는 장량(張良)이 나섰다.

"진(秦)나라의 무도한 학정(虐政)으로 말미암아 귀공 같은 일개 서민이 오늘 왕궁에 들어앉는 기회를 얻었습니다. 귀공은 임무는 한시 바삐 남은 적을 무찌르고 천하(天下)의 인심을 안정시키는 데 있습니다. 그러기 위해서는 몸소 상복을 입고 진(秦)나라에 시달린 백성(百姓)을 조상하고 위로(慰勞)하여야 합니다. 그런데도 금은보화와 여색에 눈이 어두워 진(秦)나라 왕의 음락(淫樂)을 본받으려 하니, 포악한 군주의 표본인 하(夏)나라의 걸왕(桀王)과 다를 바가 없습니다. 본시 충언(忠言)은 귀에 거슬리나 자신을 위하는 것이며, 양약은 입에 쓰나 병에는 효력(效力)이 있습니다.[忠言逆於耳而利於行] 부디 번쾌의 충언(忠言)에 따르도록 하소서."

이 말에 유방은 크게 뉘우치고 왕궁을 떠나 패상(覇上)에 진을 치고는 바로 뒤따라 진격(進擊)한 항우와 유명한 ＇홍문(鴻門)의 회(會)＇를 갖게 되었다고 한다.

《공자가어(孔子家語)》의 육본편(六本篇)에는 이런 말이 나온다. “좋은 약은 입에 쓰지만 병에 이롭고, 충언은 귀에 거슬리지만 행실에 이롭다. 은나라 탕왕은 간언하는 충성스런 신하가 있었기 때문에 번창하였고, 하나라 걸왕과 은나라의 주왕은 아첨하는 신하들만 있었기 때문에 멸망했다. 임금이 잘못하면 신하가, 아버지가 잘못하면 아들이, 형이 잘못하면 동생이, 자신이 잘못하면 친구가 간언해야 한다. 그렇게 하면 나라가 위태롭거나 멸망하는 일이 없으며, 집안에 덕을 거스르는 악행이 없으며, 친구간의 사귐도 끊임이 없을 것이다.” 좋은 충고는 귀에 거슬리지만 행함에 있어 이롭다는 뜻으로 쓰인다.
