이 문장은 to의 앞에서 끊어 번역하면, “자넨 뚜껑이 열린 맨홀에 빠지기를 얼마나 원하는가?”라는 뜻이다. 제대로 번역하자면, “자넨 뚜껑이 없는 맨홀에 빠지고 싶은 생각은 없겠지?”라고 묻는 말이다. 하지만 to의 다음에서 문장을 끊으면, “자넨 뚜껑이 없는 맨홀에 빠지는 대가로 얼마를 받고 싶은가?”라는 엉뚱한 말이 된다.

이 말은 “원가(만 받겠습니다)”라는 의미로도 쓰인다. 하지만 영화에서는 double talk로 “덮는 가격,” 즉 (맨홀을 덮는) “뚜껑 값”이라는 말도 된다.

“뚜껑 값만 주시면 기꺼이 빠지겠습니다”라는 대답을 받아서 겹대화는 이런 말로 이어진다.

Well, drop in some time.

물론 이것은 “그렇다면 만족할 만한 조건이니 나중에 한 번 들르게”라는 뜻이다. drop in이 “시간이 날 때 방문하다”라는 말이기 때문이다. 하지만 여기에서는 “그렇다면 언제 한 번 구멍에 빠져보게나”라는 뜻으로도 통한다.
